About Notre-Dame Cathedral

Reopened in December 2024 after five years of restoration, Notre-Dame de Paris is once again the beating heart of the Ile de la Cite — the island in the Seine where the city was born. Founded in 1163 under Bishop Maurice de Sully, it is one of the finest examples of French Gothic architecture in the world, from its flying buttresses and twin west towers to the three great rose windows. We'll take you through its history, its art and the practical realities of visiting so your time inside counts.

History

Construction began in 1163 and continued for nearly two centuries. Napoleon crowned himself emperor here in 1804; Victor Hugo's 1831 novel revived the neglected cathedral and prompted Viollet-le-Duc's great 19th-century restoration, which added the spire and the famous chimeras. The fire of 15 April 2019 destroyed that spire and the roof — and the five-year rebuild that followed returned the cathedral to worship and visitors in December 2024.

Access

Entry to the cathedral is free, but a timed reservation is strongly recommended from April to October, when walk-in queues can run from 30 minutes to three hours. A guided tour gives you reserved or coordinated access on many options, plus an expert to interpret an interior where independent visitors often miss the story.

Architecture & Layout

The west front sets the scene: two 69-metre towers, three sculpted portals and the western rose window. Inside, the nave rises to vaults roughly 33 metres high, lit by the north and south rose windows — among the largest in the world. Outside, the flying buttresses that ring the apse were pioneering for their day, and the rebuilt oak-and-lead flèche once again crowns the crossing.
